A Portrait of Colombian Coffee Farmers for Propina Tip (Non-Profit)

A video and photo essay on life in the coffee farms in Colombia, May 2019.

With the falling prices of coffee in the international markets, the livelihoods of many small-scale farmers in Colombia are being threatened. Colombia has about 500,000 small-scale coffee farms that employ over a million laborers to pick coffee by hand. Against the competition of larger and more mechanized farms in Brazil and Vietnam, Colombian farms are making significant losses, leading many farms to take on large debts. With Propina Tip, I visited various small-medium coffee farms in Pereira, Manizales, Gigante and Santa Rosa in Colombia.

WIth historically low coffee prices around the world, many Colombian coffee farmers are struggling to make ends meet. Against stiff competition from the more industrialized coffee producers of Brazil and Vietnam, the predominantly small-scale and family-run coffee farms in Colombia are deep in debt. Pagpropina is starting a pension fund to provide for the future of these small-scale farmers. To create this video, we traveled to the coffee belt of Colombia, visiting Manizales, Santa Rose, Gigante and Pitalito.
